Hopefully by now you’ve made walking a part of your daily routine. But don’t let yourself get into a rut. Variety is the spice of life - and also the key to keeping your walking fresh. Varying your training locations and the types of workouts you do is both mentally and physically rewarding.
I do most of my training on some great beachside courses, but occasionally I’ll want to get into the woods to do some hiking, on hills for some hill training, or on a track for some fast walking. Different kinds of workouts aren’t just good for your mental state; they do a lot of great things physically as well.
If your daily routine consists of the same 45 to 60 minutes of walking at the same pace on the same course every day, think about going shorter and faster some days, longer and slower on others; maybe even consider changing up your technique: Hike some days, “power walk” others, and perhaps try your hand (er, foot?) at racewalking on others.
To keep your walking fresh, make variety part of your new “routine!”

Dave, I agree wtih you about "variety". I walk at different times, paces, and views. I walk the beaches in my area, along with Signal Hill, 2nd Street, Marine Stadium, air port and of couse the GOLF COURSE. Walking with different walking clubs helps with my variety. I walk at a much faster pace on my own unless some one in the group wants to walk fast. Walk on!
A lot of my walking is fact-of-life based. I walk to the store to do my shopping 2X per week. I walk to the gym to exercise my shoulders 2X per week. But every now and then I do add a little variety with a trail walk or an exploration walk. But, for me, walking is a way to actually get stuff done.
For me, I really don't have the opportunity to take walks outside because my work confines me to a computer. I have a treadmill and as we all know they can get boring very quick and even if you have a great playlist that gets boring too. So I decided to try something new. I got my laptop and started watching movies on Netflix while I walked and that seems to do the trick for me. The movie keeps my mind so preoccupied that I can exercise for longer periods of time and I catch up on all the movies that I have missed.
Thanks for the input, everyone! Great ideas, all!
I usually walk in different areas. It takes may be 2-3 months before I even think about taking a walk in the same place. If I walk in a park w/many different paths, I will walk one then, walk on another path in the same park in the future. This way it keeps me from loosing interest in walking. I have been walking the malls alot lately as it is too hot even at night--at 11:00 pm it has been around 90 degrees. From now until next week-end the range will be for the day between 102-108 degrees. We have heat advisory in effect. So, walking outdoors will have to be put on the back burner for now.
