It's easy to do and is a great way to find calm and relaxation anywhere you go. In walking meditation the experience of walking becomes the main focus; becoming mindful of the experience while walking can lead to greater awareness and an overall sense of wellbeing.<br /><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Here&rsquo;s How To Do A Walking Meditation:</strong></span></p>
<ol>
<li>Dedicate a specific time to practice walking meditation. Once you are more familiar with it you will be able to practice meditating even during normal walking but in the beginning it's good to set aside a time devoted to the experience.<br /><br /></li>
<li>Have no destination in mind walk just to walk. You'll want to focus on the walk itself not on any particular place you want to go. When you have a set destination your mind will be preoccupied with getting to that place and the walk itself will no longer be the focus. For now think of the journey as the destination! This new way of thinking will help you to be present in the moment rather than always thinking about the future. <br /><br /></li>
<li>Pace your breathing with your steps. Take one step as you inhale take another step as you exhale. Don't focus your eyes or thoughts on anything in particular. When thoughts about anything other than your walking come to mind you can acknowledge them but make it a point to let them go and bring your mind back to the actions of your body; your steps your breathing etc... Keep the pace and your breathing slow and relaxed.<br /><br /></li>
<li>Try to live in the moment. Focus on what you are experiencing right now not the past or the future. If your mind begins to wanders let those thoughts pass and then bring your attention back to the present to your breath.<br /><br /></li>
<li>When you are more comfortable with it you can begin to incorporate this practice into your daily life - taking three or four slow mindful steps whenever you remember to. Notice how this changes the quality of your day. At first it might feel difficult or strange but it gets easier and feels more natural with practice and the benefits will be obvious!</li>

Post it up on your wall or refrigerator at home and at work. You want to have big reminders about your goal to keep your focus and excitement going. <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /><strong>Commit publicly.</strong> Share your goal with friends &amp; family. Post about your goals on Facebook or Twitter. Commit to giving progress updates to everyone every week or so.<br />&nbsp; <br /><strong>Get support.</strong> It can be hard to accomplish some goals alone. Find your support network either in the real world or online. Joining an online community like Walk With Walgreens can help tremendously. It's a healthier way to cook vegetables over boiling because nutrients aren't lost into the water during the cooking process. All that's required is a metal or bamboo steamer basket that fits over a large pot readily available wherever kitchen equipment is sold and usually rather inexpensive to purchase.<br /><br />Steaming works well for all kinds of vegetables and makes for a deliciously fast meal that can be prepared with a minimum of work. Different vegetables require a different amount of time in the steamer... here is a general guide:<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2 minutes: Peas<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3 to 5 minutes: Asparagus green beans spinach<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 5 to 8 minutes: Broccoli sliced carrots corn on the cob cabbage wedges zucchini<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 10 minutes: Brussels sprouts parsnips <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 15 to 20 minutes: Turnips fingerling potatoes<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 30 to 45 minutes: Beets artichokes pumpkin russet potatoes sweet potatoes<br /><br />Rather than drying foods out in the microwave keep re-heated foods moist by warming them up in a steamer instead. Thanks to some great tips from the Mayo Clinic we've put together a few suggestions to help you stay active and burning calories even if you are stuck in an office all day.<br /><strong><br />Take Advantage of Your Commute!<br /></strong>Consider walking or biking to work if possible. If you take public transportation can get off a couple stops early and walk the rest of the way. If you must drive make the most of it by parking at the far end of the lot; a great way to get in a few extra steps. If your workplace has elevators skip them in favor of taking the stairs.<strong><br /><br />Stand and Deliver!<br /></strong>Look for things you can do standing that you would normally do seated like talking on the phone or even eating your lunch. If you email or instant message with others in your office skip the computer and walk to their desk instead.<br /><strong><br />Make the Most of Breaks<br /></strong>Instead of lounging or snacking during your 15 minute breaks take a brisk walk around the building or use the time to stretch your muscles.<strong> <br /><br />Keep Your Equipment Handy<br /></strong>Resistance bands and small weights can easily be stored in your desk or cabinet. Keep them handy for stretching or lifting throughout the day. Do some arm curls or quick resistance stretches before a meeting or while on a call.<strong><br /><br />Make Friends!<br /></strong>Organize a lunchtime walking group. It is a valuable food source due to its high protein content making it very popular among vegetarians and vegans. Being a complete protein quinoa contains all the essential amino acids necessary for our nutritional needs along with plenty of iron calcium and fiber. It is also a great choice for weight loss since it's a low calorie and low cholesterol source of healthy carbohydrates. Furthermore quinoa is also <a href="http://walk.walgreens.com/post/gluten-free-diets" title="Gluten Free">gluten-free</a>.&nbsp;<br /><br />Quinoa is very easy to prepare. First rinse the quinoa thoroughly to remove its bitter coating. Then combine with 2 cups of water or broth per cup of uncooked quinoa. Bring to boil and reduce to simmer. Cook until the liquid is absorbed about 15 minutes. Once you see the germ come out it looks like a little tail you'll know it's just about ready. <br /><br /><strong>Suggestions for how to use quinoa:</strong></p>

<li>Add fruits nuts a sprinkle of cinnamon and a splash of maple syrup for a nice breakfast porridge.</li>
<li>For a refreshing salad mix cooled quinoa with black beans pumpkin seeds scallions cilantro and season to taste.</li>
<li>Add to soups to boost the nutritional content and provide a heartier texture.</li>
<li>Try quinoa instead of rice potatoes or noodles with main courses.</li>

For many of us there's just not enough time in the day to do things like read a novel or learn a new language. Combining a great habit like walking while putting your mp3 player to good use takes care of two things at once! Listening to an engaging story or practicing a foreign language is not only great brain food but it's also another excellent way to stay motivated and keep from getting bored. Try to time yourself to complete one lap around the block or park before the next chapter in your book ends or see if you can still practice repeating aloud your latest language lesson without running out of breath too soon.<br /><br />Be aware of your surroundings while wearing headphones. <p>Hi Everyone<br /><br />If you&rsquo;re tossing and turning at night it&rsquo;s possible that you need to get out there and walk more. Walking on a regular basis helps me sleep longer and fall asleep faster. Walking makes your body rise in temperature and that cooling down process allows a smoother transition from one phase of sleep to another. Just make sure you don&rsquo;t walk too close to bedtime. That could have the opposite effect. The morning afternoon or early evening is best.<br /><br /><strong>Do you find that walking helps you sleep better?</strong></p>]]></description>

<p>Hi Everyone<br /><br />Do you move around a lot at work? Maybe you do and don&rsquo;t even realize it but going back and forth from the supply closet for paper clips and the kitchen for a glass of water adds up to extra steps. Sometimes I like to pay extra close attention to how much I&rsquo;ve walked in a day. You should try it too. Then try to raise that number maybe with a short walk outside during lunch or a few more laps around the office.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[<p>Not only are garbanzo beans are rich in fiber and protein but they are loaded with thiamine riboflavin and vitamins A B6 and E. Hummus is a food dip or spread that is made from cooked and mashed garbanzo beans. If you haven&rsquo;t already tried hummus please do it&rsquo;s delicious! The following is a simple hummus recipe from Alison Sweeney&rsquo;s book <a target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1439180946?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=mommydiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1439180946"><em>The Mommy Diet</em></a>: <br /><br />Makes about 2 cups<br /><br />1 15- to 16-ounce can chickpeas aka garbanzo beans drained<br />3 tablespoons lemon juice<br />2 tablespoons water<br />1 tablespoon olive oil<br />1 garlic clove peeled<br />1 tablespoon salt<br />1 tablespoon cumin paprika or favorite hummus spice<br />Pepper optional<br /><br />Combine the chickpeas lemon juice water oil garlic salt and spice if using in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Transfer to a small bowl. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper if desired. Keeps for up to 1 day covered in the refrigerator. <br /><br />Enjoy your hummus with baby carrots cucumber slices celery sticks sliced bell pepper or pita bread. <br /><br /><strong>Have you tried hummus before?</strong></p>]]></description>

Walking 30 minutes a day just doesn&rsquo;t burn enough calories or build enough fitness to help you drop the kind of weight you&rsquo;re probably looking for. <br /><br />The key is to mix it up with longer walks shorter walks and strength training to boost your metabolism permanently. On at least two to three weekdays try to do a 45-60 minute walk. On days you walk for a shorter time pick up the pace. <p>It&rsquo;s important to regularly check your blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk of heart disease and stroke the first and third leading causes of death for Americans. High blood pressure can also cause heart failure kidney disease and blindness.</p>
<p>Talk with your doctor about how often you should be checking your blood pressure. Obviously there are a lot of factors to consider including age overall health and predispositions. Your doctor might ask that you come into the office to have your blood pressure checked or he could recommend that you check it yourself at home. Stay active eat healthy and keep a close watch on your ticker.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We all can agree that land is pretty great for walking but how about moving those steps underwater? Water walking is a fantastic way to increase resistance and it&rsquo;s also much easier on your joints. You can do it in a lake the ocean an outdoor pool or an indoor pool during the colder months.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you&rsquo;re new to water walking start out slowly like you would with any new exercise. Normal steps in waist-deep water will allow you to get the feel for it. You can gradually move up from 5 min to 20 min. If you want increased resistance consider taking bigger steps walking backwards or sideways and/or moving to chest-deep water. Also make sure to stay hydrated. Just because you&rsquo;re surrounded by water doesn&rsquo;t mean you&rsquo;re not still sweating.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lately we&rsquo;ve been bombarded with ads for high-fiber products. High-fiber seems to be all the rage and it turns out there&rsquo;s a good reason for it. Eating a high-fiber diet has shown to lower cholesterol and slow digestion. That means you stay fuller longer which lowers your calorie intake. People who eat higher-fiber diets tend to weigh less and are less prone to gain weight as they age. Some studies have also shown that a high-fiber diet can help with diabetes by regulating blood glucose and insulin.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s recommended that women get around 25g of fiber per day. To boost your daily dose work more bran into your diet. It can be found in oatmeal and most whole wheat breads. Flax and sesame seeds are also a great source of fiber. And of course we can&rsquo;t forget about fruits and vegetables. Apples and raspberries are terrific for fiber. Also nuts soybeans dried herbs and even cocoa powder.</p>

<p>Most of us are sure to give our legs a good stretch before heading out for a walk but we might often forget about our feet. Even if feet benefit a little from those leg stretches it can do you a great deal of a good to give them some stretches are their very own.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here are a few foot stretches from <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/hygiene-tips/how-to-care-for-your-feet2.htm" title="How to care for your feet" target="_blank">How Stuff Works</a> that you can do with just a towel:</p>
<p>Towel Lift: Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Bend your left knee and put your left foot flat on the floor. Place a towel around your right ankle. Grasping the ends of the towel use it to pull your right leg up. Keep your right leg straight and keep your buttocks on the floor as you do so. Hold the stretch for several seconds; then lower your leg to the floor. Repeat with the left leg.</p>
<p>Towel Scrunch: Sit on a chair and place your bare feet on the floor. Pretend you have a towel under your toes; draw the towel in toward your heels by scrunching your toes. Then reverse the exercise by using your toes to push the imaginary towel out and away from the heel. Do this ten times with each foot.</p>
<p>Towel Scoop: Sit on a chair and place your bare feet on the floor. Use the outer part of your foot to scoop the imaginary towel in toward your arches. Then use the inner part of your foot to smooth the towel back out. Do this ten times with each foot.</p>

<p>Strength training is an excellent way to supplement any walking program. It helps to increase bone mass and burn more calories. A small pair of dumbbells can get you big results. Even with a light amount of weight you can give your entire body a workout. Dumbbells are also inexpensive and easy to travel with so you can exercise at home at the gym or even in your hotel room.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Biceps curls and triceps extensions are fantastic ways to tone your arms.</p>
<p>Go right into overhead and side raises to work your shoulders.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ever try doing static lunges with the added weight of dumbbells? You&rsquo;ll really feel the burn.</p>
<p>Then finish it all off with some crunches while holding a dumbbell in front of your chest.&nbsp;</p>

It&rsquo;s great in soups noodle dishes or even as a main course. It&rsquo;s all in how you prepare it. Just be careful not to use too much cooking oil even though that adds a lot of flavor. Tofu can absorb up to 15 of the oil you cook it in and then suddenly it becomes not so healthy.</p><p>Tofu is made from soybeans so it&rsquo;s rich in protein calcium and vitamin E.
